Parent University

Studies consistently show that students whose families are involved in their education earn better grades and show a more positive attitude towards school. Parent University is a program aimed to increase parental involvement across the Waterloo Community School District. Once or twice a quarter, elementary schools host an event open to all students, parents, guardians, and family members. After receiving a free meal, all of the participants are divided up based on student’s grade level and taught a lesson related to literacy or math. Each child is allowed to take a book or math game home with them at the end of the event to continue learning at home. The Waterloo Schools Foundation gifted more than $30,000 to ten elementary schools during the 2015-16 through the Parent University program.
