STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is an integral part of our society. Aspects of these subjects can be found in almost every career in the 21st century. As a result, students need to regularly engage in STEM education to be prepare for life after graduation.
In December 2012, the Waterloo Schools Foundation provided funding for the Waterloo Community School District to hire Iowa’s first K-12 STEM Coordinator, Angela Hewitt. She stated, “STEM is not a stand-alone entity, it cuts across all disciplines and fosters critical thinking, creativity, and connections to career, college, and science literacy. My goal is to support and grow STEM initiatives, and to seek out new opportunities for students and teachers.” Hewitt has been working diligently to accomplish these goals and is an essential member of the education team.
