It’s no secret that agriculture is at the heart of Iowa’s economy and identity. But what might surprise you is that students in the Waterloo Community School District are now gaining hands-on experience in agriculture through the agri-science pathway at the Waterloo Career Center (WCC).

Thanks to generous community support through the Foundation, including more than $115,000 from Fortrex (formerly known as PSSI) and private donations, a brand-new greenhouse has taken root at the WCC. This is more than just a structure - it’s a place of opportunity and innovation for students exploring the world of agri-science.

The agri-science program has hit many milestones in its first year, with high student engagement and a growing demand for more learning experiences. The new greenhouse is a direct response to that success, giving students access to real-life applications of what they learn in the classroom.

And while it is often assumed that agriculture is only an interest within rural communities, this program introduces urban students to the world of agriculture, from plant, animal, and veterinary science to agricultural foundations. There are many projects the program hopes to have in the future, including a corn field, landscaping, a chicken coop, and an orchard.

What makes this pathway particularly exciting is its interdisciplinary nature. Students in the agri-science program won’t just grow plants - they’ll grow ideas, business, and meals. Business students will help with plant sales and marketing strategies. Culinary students will request specific herbs and vegetables for their seasonal dishes. It’s a cross-pathway collaboration that prepares students for careers while fostering creativity and teamwork - exactly the kinds of experiences the Foundation seeks to fund for our students.

Beyond the classroom, the greenhouse also opens a new door for community involvement. This May, the community had the opportunity to purchase student-grown plants. What better way to learn about the exciting things happening at the Waterloo Career Center than by bringing home a plant grown by our future agriculturists?

This greenhouse is a place to learn, grow, and thrive. We’re proud to support this project and the many students who will benefit from it for years to come!
